Pre-/ Post-Event Checklist - Preparation for Race Track

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Saturday, 02 February 2008 12:55

Dear PCM Colleagues

More and more of our customers are using their Porsche vehicle not only on public roads, but also during special events on race tracks. When driving on race tracks, the vehicles are subjected to significantly higher loads and wear & tear than under normal driving conditions
and therefore, the service life of the vehicle components will be affected. Regular service intervals are then not necessarily adequate!

It is absolutely essential, that a technical inspection has to be carried out on every vehicle before and after driving on a race track and that any worn parts are replaced or any signs of wear are detected early and rectified. This information can be found in the Driver's Manual as well.

Therefore, please find attached the Pre-/ Post-Event Checklist (Preparation for Race Track) in order to ensure a proper technical condition of any Porsche vehicle which will be used on a racing circuit! Please note, that no warranty will be granted for any defects which occur if the pre- and post-event check wasn't completed properly! (Terms & Conditions apply).

Kindly be reminded, that Porsche Assistance does not cover any costs resulting from participation in motor racing, rallies, speed or duration tests (--> please refer to the Porsche Assistance booklet 07/07).

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

With best regards,

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia
Shanghai International Circuit, April 17-19, 2009
Results - Round 1

Sugden Triumphs in Shanghai

GruppeM Racing’s Tim Sugden took victory in the opening round of the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia today at the Shanghai International Circuit. The Briton crossed the line ahead of Team StarChase racer Christian Menzel of Germany, and series newcomer and pole-sitter Rodolfo Avila of Asia Racing Team.

In Class B, it was Corum ThunderAsia Racing’s Melvin Choo who took the honours for Singapore, ahead of Jacob & Co Racing’s Philip Ma of Hong Kong, and Team PCS Racing’s David Lai, also from Singapore.

Sugden was delighted with his win, but forecast a season-long battle ahead: “It was really good fun! I was keen to make a good start, as I’d been a little worried about that. I also had new brake pads fitted which is always difficult for the first couple of laps, so I kept getting overtaken, but then the brakes came in.”

The hugely-experienced driver was also full of praise for Avila: “He drove very, very well. This is as good as I get, but for some of these drivers, they can get better. The whole season is going to be a big fight.”

For Menzel, it was a good result given the short preparation time the team had:  “Second place is OK.  It’s good points, and those are very important. Plus it was a nice fight.”

Avila impressed on his debut, holding off a hard-charging Sugden to lead for most of the 12-lap race, despite losing his pole advantage off the start.  Brushing aside any suggestion the young driver, and Porsche Carrera Cup Asia newcomer, might have nerves of steel, Avila was pragmatic: “I was slow in a few corners, and I tried to slow Tim down in a few.

At first, I was managing the distance between us, but then later on I made a few mistakes. But it was a good race, and I’m getting to know who I’m racing against. I need to work harder, but this was my first ever race in a Porsche, so it’s a very good boost for me.”

Choo is embarking on the season with a fresh outlook: “I found my pace in the race,
but the driver in front of me was black flagged but didn’t see, so I was waiting for him to come in. Anyway, I’m not looking backwards, only forwards!  I’m going to go as fast as I can and not think of anything else. Be aggressive, without doing anything stupid, and be clam.” So far, the new philosophy is evidently working.

For Ma, it was a less than ideal start to his seventh Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season, but he was typically upbeat: “It could have been better!  I got a good start and saw
Tunku (Hammam) in front, and I thought he’d take Melvin (Choo). Then I saw the incident with Melvin, so I thought it was a good chance for me. But then I locked up under braking. Luckily I didn’t hit the barrier, but Melvin recovered from his spin better than I as I had to wait for traffic.”

Menzel was away like lightning from the second row of the grid, pulling alongside Sugden and Avila at the start. However, it was Sugden who led out of the first turn, and who regained the lead after Menzel got by but then ran wide. That let both Sugden and Avila through, demoting the German to third, but the Macanese racer dived past the Briton to grab the lead.

Sri Lanka’s Dilantha Malagamuwa was right up with trio, having pulled out a gap from the chasing pack led by Ringo Chong, Mok Weng Sun and Danny Chu.

At the front, despite his best efforts to pull out a gap, Sugden had closed in on Avila, briefly reclaiming the lead on lap three.  However, after a nail biting three-abreast moment, Avila was back at the front.  Despite the best efforts of Sugden, the younger driver refused to be rattled, setting the fastest lap and maintaining his concentration.

With just two laps to go, Avila made an error, allowing Sugden past to take the lead and the victory. A second error by the newcomer saw Menzel get by to claim second, but Avila had more than earned the final podium place.

Malagamuwa, who had driven one of his best ever races, dramatically spun and stopped in the closing stage, a disappointing end to what had been an excellent run.

Indonesia’s Danny Chu was given a drive-through penalty, while Team PCS Racing’s Yuey Tan had to retire after an incident with guest driver Augusto Perfetti.

Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion Darryl O’Young was unable to take the start due to insufficient time between qualifying and the race to prepare a new engine.  Team Jebsen is hoping the engine will be ready for Round 2 tomorrow so it can get its title defence underway.

Round 2 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will be run over 12 laps of the 5.5km Shanghai International Circuit tomorrow, as part of the 2009 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

Porsche Carrera Cup Asia
Beijing Goldenport International Circuit, May 8-10, 2009
Preview – Rounds 3&4

Stage Set for Triumphant Beijing Return

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is set to make a triumphant return to China ’s capital city, scene of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, next weekend after an absence of three years.  As part of the inaugural “Fascination Porsche” weekend, the region’s leading GT specialists are keen to continue the championship contest which began earlier this month in spectacular fashion at the 2009 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

After just two rounds of the 2009 season it is already apparent that racing fans can look forward to another close-fought championship battle, with several surprises along the way.

Leading the charge into Rounds 3 and 4 are German Christian Menzel and Briton Tim Sugden, tied neck-and-neck at the top of the leaderboard with 38 points each. Both Nanjing-based Team StarChase racer Menzel, runner-up in 2008, and Qingdao GruppeM Racing’s Sugden, 2007 champion, each bagged a race win and runner-up finish during the two opening rounds.

However, the field contains a wealth of talent and any number of drivers capable of challenging for the top spot.

On his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut in Shanghai , Macau ’s Rodolfo Avila got off to a superb start, grabbing pole position and taking two podium finishes. The young Asia Racing Team driver’s impressive performance put him just five points behind the far more experienced Menzel and Sugden.

Reigning Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Champion, Team Jebsen’s Darryl O’Young, will have put what was a disastrous start to his title defense in Shanghai firmly behind him once he arrives in Beijing.  Plagued by mechanical problems, which saw him collect just five points in Shanghai , the Hong Kong racer will be looking for a perfect weekend at the 3.3km Goldenport circuit, scene of Team Jebsen’s first ever series victory.

Wuhan’s Team Kangshun driver Ringo Chong is currently fourth on the leaderboard after two strong races in Shanghai, while Team PCS Racing driver Mok Weng Sun trails him by just three points.

Indonesia’s Danny Chu made a strong start to his second Porsche Carrera Cup Asia season, while Sri Lankan Dilantha Malagamuwa just missed out on a podium in the second race, although a DNF in the first dented an otherwise powerful performance in the opening meeting of the season.

Corum ThunderAsia Racing’s Melvin Choo is sixth overall and also Class B points leader.  After narrowly missing out on the title last year, the Singaporean is determined to win the championship this time around, and his pair of victories have given him a seven point lead over newcomer Mak Hing Tak and Philip Ma, both of Hong Kong, who are joint second.

Since the series debuted in 2003, China has played an increasingly significant role in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia.  In 2009, at least four of the seven meetings will be held in China, with two weekends in Shanghai, one at the Zhuhai International Circuit in the Pearl River Delta region, and the forthcoming Beijing event.  With eight teams representing a number of cities across China, the race is on for local honours too.

The ‘Fascination Porsche’ weekend is the first such event organized by Porsche China and Porsche Asia Pacific, and will provide an opportunity to experience the extraordinary heritage of this iconic marque.

Commented Porsche Asia Pacific’s Manager Motorsport, Christoph Choi: “We’re really looking forward to coming back to race in Beijing. The Chinese motorsport landscape has grown and developed significantly since the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia first began in 2003, and we’re proud that the series has been at the forefront of both Asian and Chinese motorsport development. With so much talent in the series this year, I think our fans, partners and friends will have a memorable experience in Beijing.”
